Tomorrow is the biggest party of the summer, the 4th of July. Just about everyone will be doing something to celebrate America’s birthday and most likely this will involve a party or BBQ at someone’s home.

At By Carrier we wish everyone a safe and fun 4th of July weekend and we want to pass along some tips for keeping your home and family safe during the celebration.

Fireworks: One of the time-honored traditions of this festive holiday is lighting off fireworks. If you will be igniting fireworks at your home make sure a responsible adult is supervising the task. Also make sure you have a fire extinguisher or hose nearby to douse any flames out and don’t light fireworks near dry grass. Never aim fireworks towards your home since this can lead to damage to the siding and a possible fire.

Children & Pets: If you have young children or a cat or dog, the 4th of July can be a nerve-wracking experience. All-day parties, fireworks and loud music can irritate kids and pets so be sure your home has a cool, calm and quiet room where children and pets can get away from the noise. Also, be aware of how your pets react to fireworks and consider leaving them with a friend if they spook easy.

BBQ’s: Chances are there will be some serious grilling going on at your house party. Be careful when operating a charcoal or propane gas grill. Don’t let pets or children too close and always have someone watching over the grill in case of an emergency. When finished grilling, ensure the propane tank is shut off completely and that the cover is put down to prevent any sparks or embers from escaping.

Pool Safety: If your home has a pool it will probably be in use on the 4th of July. Remember to always have an adult supervise young children in the pool and keep the number of people in the pool at one time to a minimum. Alcohol and pools don’t mix and if a guest has had too much to drink they could be at risk for drowning. Keep an eye out for anyone who has had too much to drink and ensure they don’t get in the pool or behind the wheel of a car.
