Summer has many benefits – longer days, warmer weather, time off – but it also brings unwanted pests. Ticks, mosquitoes, wasps and fleas thrive during this season and it’s not uncommon to see them in your backyard.
Once inside your home, these pests can cause varying degrees of damage and you’ll likely need an exterminator to get rid of them. By following these four tips, you can greatly reduce the number of pests that sneak in.
Look for Signs
Insects are small and sneaky, but nearly all of them leave behind clues of their presence. As a homeowner, keep a sharp lookout for signs that insects have made their way into your home. Check areas where bugs are most likely to be, including garbage cans, pantries and basements. Once they have been discovered, it’s time to develop a plan of action for removal.
Secure Entry Points
Most pests only need a small crack to get inside but start by securing the most obvious ways in. Popular entry points include windows, vents, pipes, chimneys and roof shingles. Closely inspect these areas and look for any sign of wear or tear that could create an opening. Repair these areas as quickly as possible and continue to check regularly, in case more work is necessary.
Keep Your Home Clean
When pests enter your home, they are seeking food, water and shelter. From a small spill to an unsecure canister, having more food out will result in more pests. One preventative measure is to keep your home as clean as possible. Always store food properly in sealed containers, wipe down counters after cooking and eating, vacuum regularly and make sure garbage bins are tightly sealed.
Stay Dry
Wet areas are a breeding ground for many insects. A sink filled with dirty dishes, moist bathtubs and buckets of standing water are all hot spots. Other problem areas include the pipes below a sink and damp basements. In rooms that are prone to moisture, have a dehumidifier or exhaust fan running to help lower the humidity levels.
