Warmer seasons are the prime time to complete your various home improvement projects. Snow in the winter prevents you from seeing debris that may be around your grounds or clinging to your siding. The absence of slippery surfaces in the summer allows you to get certain crucial projects out of the way without having to worry about injuries.
Although homeowners may start checking items off of their list in the spring, be sure to get the following out of the way before summer ends:
- Power Washing: Dirt, sap, pollen, algae and other debris collect on your home’s exterior, marring its appearance. Whether you do it yourself or hire a professional, power washing removes dirt with a high-pressured stream of water, often with a chemical added.
- Re-Staining: If you have wooden decks, window sills or porches, winter weather can wreck havoc on these materials. In the warmer conditions, first check for and replace warped boards, then re-apply stains and varnishes.
- Replace Siding: If any siding becomes loose or damaged, now’s the time to have it removed and replaced with stronger material.
- Installing Fans and Air Conditioners: As the temperatures climb higher, having a way to cool your home becomes essential.
- Draining Hot Water Heaters: On a similar note, you have to be prepared when temperatures drop in the fall. Drain your heating component of any sediment this summer so it isn’t overloaded.
- Remodeling: With fewer rainy days and ideal temperatures during the day, schedule your remodeling projects, including the building of any outdoor living spaces.
- Plumbing Inspections: In the process, be ready to fix any leaking faucets or pipes.
- Fixing Concrete: When water leaks through the cracks of your sidewalk, it turns to ice and expands, causing more damage. To keep your driveway, sidewalk or walkway free of hazards, fill in any potholes or cracks in the concrete.
- Windows: This time of year, check that your windows continue to be energy efficient. If not, see if you can modify them with a low-emissivity coating or consider replacing them for more modern fixtures.
- Inspecting the Roof: Like your siding, the roof sees shingles curl, crack or fall off, which could indicate a problem with the materials below. Schedule a full inspection by a professional and have any repairs done before the season is over.
- Check the Foundation: Pooling water and ice can crack your foundation, especially if you also have gutter problems. Once you’ve fixed the foundation, address any structural issues with the gutters before you notice mold buildup in the basement.
- Check the Attic: Pests may have found a home in your attic during the winter months. This time of year, if you spot a colony of bats or squirrels, get a pest control expert involved.
- Clean Up the Lawn: Whether you’re still addressing winter damage or have grass that needs mowing, put in a few hours each week to maintain the greenery surrounding your property.
