A Storied History

Watertown Sign Located northeast of Waterbury is the charming Connecticut town of Watertown. Incorporated as a town in 1780, Watertown originally formed when Thomas Judd and 35 other proprietors bought the ;and from the Paugasuck Indians in 1684.  Watertown actually began as the First Ecclesiastical Society of Westbury in 1738 and 42 years later separated from Waterbury and officially changed its name to Watertown. The towns of Plymouth and Thomaston were originally part of Watertown but would eventually branch out to incorporate as independent towns. Some of the original businesses that helped establish Watertown include Merritt Heminways spooled silk thread, the Watertown, the Watertown Manufacturing’s Company’s plastic shatterproof dinnerware and the Oakville Pin Shop. Today, Watertown occupies approximately 29.8 square miles and features a population just over 22,000. With easy access to Route 6 and I-84, Watertown is a great location for families that enjoy traditional New England charm while enjoying short drives to major cities including Hartford and New York City.
